Restoration

The Lock Keeper's Cottage will be restored to it's former glory and will include period fixtures and fittings. The last Lock Keeper to live in the house was George Kilpatrick who was lock keeper until the canal's closure in 1956. I'm led to believe that George's grand-daughter is assisting Castlereagh Borough Council in the restoration of the cottage.

New Visitor's Centre

The new visitor's centre has been raised up off the ground due to it being on a potential flood plain.

As well as featuring a coffee shop, the centre may include a small interpretive display featuring the working of a lock. The new visitor's centre will be staffed by a team knowledgeable about the area, it's history and it's wildlife.
