Anglers are sometimes confused about the difference between a licence and a permit. A permit or day ticket is a document issued by the owner of a fishery which confers the right to fish in that fishery.

An owner can be a private individual or a company, an angling club or in the case of the the Public Angling Estate, a Goverment Department.

A licence is required by law for using a fishing rod (except when angling for sea fish).

Licenses can be purchased from the Belfast Welcome Centre, 47 Donegal Place, Belfast BT1 5AD

Wild Salmon and Trout Fishery

The fishery is close to Belfast City Centre. It stretches for approximately 1km from Shaw's Bridge to below Red Bridge. There are a number of good fly fishery stretches along this stretch. The river below Red Bridge is deep and slow flowing with fishing points available all along the old tow-path on the West bank from Red Bridge downstream to Stranmillis weir and beyond. It has good spinning water at certain places. Access has been improved by the Laganside development as far down as the Queens Bridge .
